By Redactie Inburgering — compiled based on inburgeren.nlLast checked: 2026-06-28
The Writing exam part is done with pen and paper, not on a computer — the only one of the four language parts that is. You complete 4 writing tasks, such as filling out a form and writing a short message. At A2 level the exam takes 40 minutes.

What does the exam look like?

You complete 4 writing tasks at A2 level: for example, filling out a form, writing one or two short messages (such as a note to a neighbour or an email to an organization), and one or two open writing tasks about an everyday topic.

What do you need to be able to do?

You write short, understandable texts about everyday topics, with correct basic vocabulary and simple sentences. It's mainly about whether your message comes across clearly, not about perfect spelling or grammar.

How do you practice?

inburgeren.nl offers 3 free downloadable practice exams for Writing (as a PDF) — print these out and complete them with pen and paper, just like on the real exam day. Also practice filling out forms and writing short messages and simple letters. Ask your language teacher for feedback whenever possible, or have someone who reads Dutch well look it over.
