Exemption from the integration duty
Automatic exemption: no duty by default
You can be automatically exempt from the integration duty, for example if you:
- Attended at least 8 years of compulsory education in the Netherlands
- Hold a recognized Dutch diploma at the required level
- Have already shown sufficient integration through an earlier procedure
Granted exemption: apply with DUO
You can apply for a granted exemption if a psychological, intellectual, or physical limitation demonstrably prevents you from integrating, even via the Z-route. DUO assesses your application, often with a medical statement.
How do I apply?
You apply for both automatic and granted exemption with DUO. Also discuss your situation with your municipality, which can help you with the right supporting documents.
